If you have ever taken a drive to Meadowville, you may have noticed this beautiful red barn with the heart painted on it. The first time I saw it, my mind quickly began to wonder what type of person would do such a lovely thing and why. I believe it must be a person who believes in love. Who believes in hope. Who believes in putting out good into the world. There must be an interesting story behind it. So, I asked around.
I had a lovely conversation with the current owner of the century-old farmhouse located on the Trans Canada Trail in Pictou County. Carissa purchased the property last year and is moving here officially at the end of April. The snow will be gone by then, but the charming red barn will look just as picturesque as in the photo.
After chatting a bit, I asked, “Do you know who and why the barn is painted red with a heart on it?” She smiled softly, “The previous owner of the property, Kerstin, painted the barns as a surprise for her late husband, Heinz who was working out of province at the time.” She went on to share, “As an expression of their love, she added the heart.” I remained quiet for a moment as I let the gravity of that act of love wash over me. In today’s world where everything seems to be so hurried, I reflected on the time it took to create such an expression. What a beautiful legacy.
Their story reminded me of this quote by Rossiter Raymond, “Whoever you hold in the heart of you, is forever and always a part of you.” How lovely that it is now a part of us too. That is true community connection. Thank you
