Therapeutic Free-Range Animal Snuggles at Small World Farms
There is a little farm tucked away at 588 Dan Fraser Road in Green Hill, Pictou County. The owners, Linda, and Bill Dunn have generously decided to open their farm for all to enjoy this summer. “Our animals are all free-range so it's all hands-on for the kids and all with safety in mind,” said Linda.
I asked, “How many years have you been running the Farm?” She replied, “We’ve had the farm for 6 years now. Bill and I both have older daughters that like to buy animals and drop them off,” she laughed, “we started out with one mini. Then two weeks after him, we figured he needed a friend, so we brought home a second one and it all was down hill from there.”
I was curious to know what kind of animals roam free on the farm, so I asked. She smiled, “We have fainting goats, alpacas. ducks, silky chicks, bunnies, mini horses, mini donkeys, cows, emus, and peacocks.” Wow, peacocks in Pictou County – who knew?
“What inspired you to make it a Petting Farm?” I asked. She answered, “We decided to take on a petting farm because of how many people would stop on the road with the kids trying to see the animals from their car windows. I mentioned to Billy that we should let the public enjoy it as well. He agreed, so we are.”
In the spirit of giving to the community, the Dunn’s do not charge admission to their Petting Farm. Instead, they accept donations so that, as Linda says, "if you only have a couple bucks can come and enjoy a day".
It is just a little place for people to go, release some stress and get some amazing snuggles from the animals. "It's very therapeutic,” she said with a warm soft smile. Ah, nature at its best. We couldn't agree more!
Small World Farm will open for the season on Sunday, May 1st, 2022, and every Sunday from 10am to 4:00pm until the fall. (by appointment only during the week).
