The Simple Yet Powerful Gift of Friendship

Sometimes in life you find a special friend. Someone who changes your life just by being a part of it. Someone who makes you laugh until you can’t stop. Someone who makes you believe that there is good in the world. This is exactly what Donna discovered after becoming a Big Sister in 2015. Little did she realize how this seemingly “small” decision would have such a big impact and change her life.

She happily shared, “Jackie and I were matched in October 2015. She had been on the waiting list for about 4 1/2 years at that point and Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) were very happy when I mentioned my previous work and education with those who have special needs.“ Knowing it takes an extra special person to do that work I asked, “Is there a personal reason why you were passionate to work with children with special needs?” She answered, “Not really. Compassion I suppose, I always felt that everybody deserved to be loved and treated like everyone else.”

She continued, “Jackie was 13 when we were matched, and she will be 20 years old in June. Although most BBBS matches "age out" at age 18, I insisted on still seeing and spending time with Jackie because I love doing so.” It was clear that the feelings go both ways! I could easily sense that having Jackie in her life has made a huge impact.” How has the experience of being a Big Sister affected your life in a positive way?” She exclaimed, “Oh my, there are so many positives! People talk about the benefits for the Littles, but there are just as many benefits for the Bigs! She keeps me young; she makes me laugh, oh how we make each other laugh! We get to do fun things together,” she laughed, “She doesn't talk much, but when she does, you can be sure it's a zinger!” I laughed.

Her voice suddenly changed to a soft sentimental tone, “Aside from the fun, spending time with her makes me happy which has been a god-send through the loss of my husband in 2017, and the isolation of the pandemic for the last two years.” I replied, “What a wonderful thing. It sounds like you two are the perfect match!” The corners of her lips turned upward with the most grateful smile, “I think we are. She's opened my life up to so many new experiences, just as I have to her.” Simply beautiful, I thought to myself.  

I will leave you with this motto which Donna lives by which sums her story beautifully.  "A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove. The world may be different because I was important In the life of a child."
