Meet Jenny – Shining the Spotlight on Local Theatre Group
There are some people you meet in life whose positive energy is so contagious that you are suddenly grinning from ear to ear without even realizing it. This is exactly what happened during my recent conversation with Jenny. This professional actress, singer, stand-up comedian, and proud mom is now sharing her passion with others by teaching drama and Improv classes at Glasgow Square Theatre.
I wondered what inspired her to get involved in the theatre and comedy. So, I asked, “Is it something you always longed to be involved with even as a child?” She smiled, “When I started high school I felt out of place. New kids, big school, etc. I was pudgy and awkward and just didn't fit in. Joining the theatre group at school gave me a chance to be my goofy self without judgment,” she continued, “Drama class is one of the few places you can be vulnerable and truly show yourself. It was my safe place.”
I asked, “How did you feel the first time you went on stage?” She lit up, “I was sweaty and nervous but when that spotlight hit me, it was like nothing I'd ever felt! I was hooked from that point on,” she added, “I wanted to be an actress on Broadway but my journey to the grand stage kind of took a detour as I had a beautiful child instead,” she smiled, “A friend of mine who was already working for Mirvish Productions in Toronto suggested I get back into theatre as a teacher. Teaching kids drama and seeing them grow and change and become confident beautiful people still puts a glow in my heart. After I moved to New Glasgow in June, I found theatre again as a way to find my people and share my passion. As a side note,” she laughed, “I had never even been here before the day we moved!”
I couldn’t help but feel there may be people in our community that theatre could be the perfect outlet to explore. I replied, “I love that you are giving back to your new community.” She answered,” Thank you, it gives youth an outlet that isn't a sport but still teaches them teamwork, empathy, cooperation skills, and more. Just like sports.” I quickly nodded in agreement, “Plus script work helps with reading skills and stage work helps with public speaking.”That's amazing I thought; and wondered if she teaches adults too. She continued, “I run youth and adult classes at the Glasgow Square Theatre. The next round will be starting in May. Join us for some fun and laughs!”
I left our conversation feeling invigorated, inspired, and excited about new experiences. Life is too short so why not try something new, right? It’s never too late to get out of your comfort zone and explore possibilities. Who knows what you may discover!
