Meet Sarah – Friendship Blooms at the Garden Club
This busy married mom of two young children has a passion for gardening. Her love began many years ago, “My parents had an urban garden for food, so we grew up always having a garden. A lot of the time, we helped with pulling weeds or picking beans,” she began to giggle, “Against our wills and under many protests,” she continued, “I love having our own garden, and my kids enjoy helping out too.”
Sarah was simply delighted to discover that the Pictou Area and Garden Club put a call out inviting new members to join. She quickly jumped at the opportunity. I asked the New Glasgow resident,” How long have you been a member of the Pictou and Area Garden Club?” She smiled, “Well, approximately 3 weeks! The fee is only $10/year, the membership gives you 10% off garden-related items at Home Hardware, and they host monthly in-person socials/meetings which take place in Pictou. Absolutely worth the fee! And all the knowledge and experience I will gain.”
Lightheartedly I commented, “I bet it beats watching YouTube garden videos when you can ask and be surrounded by so many members with so much knowledge.” She lit up,” Absolutely! I would much rather ask someone locally. I get to be part of a great, local group with shared interests. The knowledge and exposure to new things are well worth it. Exposure to new plants, techniques, and care, ability to ask questions... that's priceless.” I quickly smiled and nodded in agreement.
Our conversation reminded me of just how important these types of groups are in a community. It’s more than gardening. It’s a place where knowledge and friendship bloom, connections are made, and a sense of belonging and happiness is created.
I think this quote sums it up nicely, “Let us be grateful to people who make us happy. They are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.”
