If you head East down Hwy 104, get off at Exit 27, and follow the 245 past Merigomish, you will discover Big Island Beach. This iconic beach is a great spot for beachcombing and at low tide, the sand bars and shallow waters appear out of nowhere which hold a mysterious secret!
Just before you drive on the Island, there’s a little spot to park on the right just before the first driveway. If you walk over the dune to the beach and head left for 15 – 20 minutes, you'll find a big cluster of large rocks in the water. Keep your eyes open as this is where the mystery begins.
As you bounce from rock to rock, you will be intrigued by etchings on the stones. Suddenly, a sculpture appears carved into the rock. Not just any sculpture, but a face. His eyes appear to be closed, but you still feel like he is watching over you.
Most mysterious is the carving beneath which has a daunting message which reads, “He who treads upon this rock where spirits dance and evil’s walk and harms in any way this face, his head will someday take its place.” Is it a joke? Is it a curse? Who knows?
At the time of this writing, I could not find who carved the stone or the message beneath it. We are left to wonder if the mystery will ever be solved.
All I know is that I’m not going to test fate. Instead, I shall let sleeping giants lie.
