Ebenezer Cemetery - Mysterious Caretakers Keep Watch

If you have ever traveled westbound on Highway 104 towards Truro, you’ve passed by this Cemetery on the side of the highway in Salt Springs.

I know that I’ve passed by it many times and often wondered why is it there? Who are the people buried there? And who are the caretakers that keep watch and maintain it? I found some answers to my questions, but not all.

I discovered that the cemetery is named after a church that was also called Ebenezer. The church was formed by a group under the Free Church of Scotland that was started in 1845 by 20 families. The Ebenezer Church was located next to the remaining cemetery which was demolished in 1976.

There are only a few family names on the gravestones in the remaining cemetery; Maxwell, Peacock, Williams, and Proudfoot. The cemetery seems to be quite well cared for. However, no one seems to know who the mysterious caretakers are. I wonder if any of their ancestors keep watch over the gravesites? Maybe one day we will find out.

The cemetery looks lonely as it sits there on the side of a busy highway surrounded by hay fields. However, I like to think that the souls buried here find peace knowing thousands of cars pass by daily and that they are not alone.

Even though many people passing by may not stop to visit them, they are not forgotten.
